SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Krista Boesing and UNCG’s Mandy Garvens have been named the Southern Conference offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for matches played Nov. 5-11, the conference office announced Monday. These are the final weekly awards of the 2018 season.
Boesing, an outside hitter, hit .298 and averaged 4.17 kills per set as the Bulldogs capped off the regular season with two wins. Against Chattanooga in a midweek contest, the native of New Albany, Indiana, led all players with 17 kills and hit .429 in the sweep of the Mocs. She added four digs and four block assists in the win. In the regular-season finale against Western Carolina, the senior tallied 16 kills to help pace the Bulldogs to a 3-1 home victory. Heading into the SoCon Championship, Boesing leads conference players in total kills (447) and is third with 3.66 kills per set. She has 250 kills in conference matches, also a league best.
Garvens, a libero, averaged 5.88 digs per set as UNCG went 2-0 on the week with 3-1 wins over Wofford and Furman. She had 20-plus digs in each of the wins to help the Spartans to the No. 6 seed in the upcoming tournament. Against the Terriers, the freshman led all players with 21 digs and added four assists. A day later against Furman, she finished with 26 digs, again a match high.
Samford (16-14, 11-5 SoCon) is the No. 2 seed in the SoCon tournament, held Nov. 16-18 in Greensboro, North Carolina, on the campus of UNCG. The Bulldogs face off against No. 7 seed Chattanooga in the quarterfinal round on Friday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m.
