SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week Monday for all games played Oct. 27. Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams and Furman kicker Grayson Atkins repeated as Offensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, while Furman’s Donavan Perryman was named Defensive Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tyrie Adams, Western Carolina, R-Jr., QB, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams earned his second straight weekly honor after posting 390 yards of total offense in the Catamounts’ 45-43, triple-overtime loss at No. 25 ETSU on Saturday. Adams impressed with his arms and his legs, throwing for 229 yards and four touchdowns on 20-for-29 passing and rushing for 161 yards and a score on 27 carries. Adams became WCU’s career leader in passing touchdowns in the game, finishing with 53 to pass former teammate Troy Mitchell’s school benchmark of 50 and move into ninth place in SoCon history. Thanks in part to a career-long 48-yard rush, Adams posted the fifth game of his career with at least 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing.
Other nominees: Jacob Saylors (ETSU), JeMar Lincoln (Furman), Bryce Nunnelly (Chattanooga) and Andre Stoddard (Wofford).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Donavan Perryman, Furman, Jr., LB, Rock Hill, S.C.
Furman linebacker Donavan Perryman headlined a strong Paladin defensive effort with 12 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery that he returned 20 yards for a touchdown with just over 2 minutes remaining to ice a 28-17 win at The Citadel on Saturday. Perryman helped limit the Bulldogs to a season-low 17 points and just 157 yards on the ground, more than 125 yards per game fewer than their FCS seventh-ranked season average entering the contest. The fumble return for a score was Furman’s first since the 2012 campaign.
Other nominees: Willie Eubanks (The Citadel), Blake Bockrath (ETSU), Isaiah Mack (Chattanooga), Marvin Tillman (Western Carolina) and DT Wilson (Wofford).
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Grayson Atkins, Furman, So., K, Inman, S.C.
Furman kicker Grayson Atkins averaged 50.9 yards on seven punts against The Citadel, including a career-best 81-yarder that was good for the third-longest in school history. That punt was one of two over 50 yards on the day for Atkins, who logged a touchback and put two inside the 20-yard line on the day. Atkins also went 4-for-4 on extra-point opportunities and handled kickoff duties, averaging 55.2 yards and five kicks and recording one touchback.
Other nominees: Matthew Campbell (The Citadel), JJ Jerman (ETSU), Ian Berryman (Western Carolina) and Luke Carter (Wofford).
