BULLDOGS' NELSON RUNS NATION'S FASTEST TIME IN 1500
STANFORD, Calif. – Late Friday night at Cobb Track on the campus of Stanford University, Samford's Karisa Nelson continued her brilliant 2007 season in impressive fashion as the Bulldogs' junior distance runner registered the fastest collegiate time in the nation in the 1500-meter run. Nelson turned in a tally of 4:10.91 at the world-renown Payton Jordan Invitational, which annually produces a collection of world-, U.S.-, and collegiate-leading times.
Nelson, who became Samford's first athlete in Division I history to win an NCAA Championship in January, competed against eight professional runners in Friday's race. She placed second in the event behind just Karoline Bjerkeli of Norway with a time of 4:10.74.
Bjerkeli is a Norwegian superstar who competed for her native country in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, as well as four world championships.
Nelson, Samford's first Division I national champion in school history, won the NCAA championship in the women's indoor mile earlier this year with a personal-best time of 4:31.24.
She shattered her personal-best time by over four seconds en route to the championship
Nelson and the Samford University track and field teams will next be in action May 11-12, as the Bulldogs compete in the 2017 SoCon Outdoor Championships. Samford will be hosting the must-see event this season at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
FURMAN'S REEDER COMPETES AT PAYTON JORDAN INVITATIONAL
STANFORD, CALIF. – Senior Troy Reeder competed in the 3,000m Steeplechase Friday at the Payton Jordan Invitational track and field meet in Stanford, Calif.
Reeder posted a time of 8:47.58 to take eighth place in his heat, which was comprised of just three collegiate athletes and seven professional runners. His time was 13th overall between the two heats.
Furman will compete at the Southern Conference Championships in Birmingham, Ala., May 11-12.
