SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina's Keion Crossen and Matieus Brown have been named the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, while ETSU's Katrina Seymour and Western Carolina's Hailey Cook claimed honors on the women's side, the conference office announced Thursday. Selections are made by a group of the league's track and field coaches and included competition held April 26 through May 2.
Crossen ran the 100-meter dash in 10.38 seconds – a new SoCon-leading time – at the Western Carolina Track and Field Invitational last weekend. His time of 10.38 seconds puts him 33rd in the East Regional. The junior from Garysburg, North Carolina, also ran a 47.6 split on the 4x400-meter relay, guiding a Catamount B relay team that now leads the SoCon with a time of 3:13.07.
Brown won the shot put title at the Western Carolina Track and Field Invitational with a mark of 16.49 meters (54-1.25), which was just 0.14 centimeters shy of the all-time Catamount record. The junior from Broadway, North Carolina, leads the SoCon in the shot put by over half of a meter. Brown also threw the discus 47.01 meters, earning a second-place finish in the event and is now top discus thrower in the SoCon.
Seymour, a senior, earned first-place finishes in both the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles at the Western Carolina Track and Field Invitational. In the 400-meter dash, Seymour posted a conference-leading time of 54.71 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, she completed the event in 57.96 seconds, becoming the conference leader and now ranks 12th and 21st in the East Region and NCAA, respectively. The New Providence, Bahamas, native has broken her own ETSU record in the 400-meter hurdles three times this year. Seymour also anchored a 4x400-meter relay unit that ran in 3:49.78, which is the second-fastest relay time in the SoCon.
Cook competed in the shot put, hammer throw and discus throw at the Western Carolina Track and Field Invitational. The senior registered a conference-leading throw 15.31 meters (50-2.75) in the shot put to place second overall at the Catamount-hosted meet. Her best mark in the shot put of 15.31 meters ranks 38th in the East Regional outdoor qualifying list. In the hammer throw, Cook threw for 52.00 meters, also the top mark in the SoCon this season, to earn a fifth-place finish in the event. In the discus, Cook placed second overall with a best-throw of 43.85 meters (143-10). With that mark, Cook is currently No. 2 in the event among SoCon competitors.
