INDIANAPOLIS – Southern Conference tournament champion UNCG learned Monday that it will face Clemson in the Clemson, South Carolina, NCAA Regional on Friday. The St. John's Red Storm and the Vanderbilt Commodores are the two others teams that were placed in the Clemson Regional.
UNCG (35-22) downed Furman 13-1 in seven innings Sunday at the SoCon Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases at Fluor Field to earn the league's automatic bid. The Spartans, making their first NCAA appearance since 1997, will face off with the host Tigers at Doug Kingsmore Stadium at 7 p.m.
The regional is a double-elimination format.
Clemson enters as the top seed in the regional, having finished the 2017 regular season 39-19, dropping both of its games in the ACC tournament. Vanderbilt is the regional's second seed. The Commodores enter the regional at 33-22-1 overall and finished third in the SEC East at 15-13-1. St. John's, a member of the Big East Conference, will be the three seed. The Red Storm earned a 42-11 record and are 13-2 in neutral-site games this season.
This marks the second straight season that the SoCon champion has been sent to Clemson, as Western Carolina went there last year and downed Nebraska but lost twice to the Tigers.
Ticket information will be available later in the week.
