Seymour advances to 400m hurdle quarterfinal at NCAA East
LEXINGTON, Ky. – With a time of 59.17 in the 400 meter hurdles, ETSU women's track and field senior Katrina Seymour qualified for the 400mH quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon on day one of the NCAA East Prelims at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field facility.
“I'm very happy for Katrina to get through the first race. It was really a sigh of relief more than anything after getting injured at the conference meet,” said director of track & field/cross country George Watts. “She ran at about 80 percent effort today and will have to run much harder and faster tomorrow.”
In the second heat of the day, Seymour blazed to a time of 59.17 and a second place finish in the heat, automatically qualifying her for the quarterfinal. The 400mH quarterfinal is set to take place on Friday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Of the two quarterfinal heats for the 400mH on Friday, Seymour has to finish in the top three in her heat or have the next best three times in order to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.
Seymour ran in one of the most competitive heats of the day in the 400mH as six of the eight runners were from power five conference schools, the most of any heat. The heat also featured two of the top 20 fastest times in the NCAA in the event.
Overall of the six heats in the first round of the NCAA East Prelims, Seymour's time of 57.19 sits as the 13th fastest.
“The great thing is that we will have all four of our athletes competing tomorrow,” said Watts. “They just need to prepare like they would for any other meet, enjoy the moment and compete hard.”
Three more Buccaneers will compete tomorrow at the east prelims. Schedule is below:

Furman's Lara Advances in 10,000m, Adams Through to Semifinals In 1,500m at NCAA East Preliminaries | Photos
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior Frank Lara finished 11th in the semifinals of the 10,000m to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships, while sophomore Ryan Adams placed tenth in the first round of the men's 1,500m to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals Thursday in the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships East Preliminaries, which are being hosted by the University of Kentucky, in Louisville, Ky.
Lara, who hails from Houston, Texas, ran at the front of the pack throughout the 10,000m, posting a time of 30:04.28 to advance to the finals, which will be held on June 7 in Eugene, Ore. Junior Josh Brickell finished 16th, just four spots shy of the cut, with a time of 30:24.20, while junior Tanner Hinkle, who holds the Paladin record of 29:15.99 in the event, crossed the line in 30:42.99 to take 23rd place.
Adams, who hails from Hudson, Ohio, finished second in his heat of the 1,500m with a time of 3:50.37 to qualify automatically for the quarterfinal round, which is slated for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. He entered the event ranked 15th in the East with a top time of 3:42.90 this season. The Paladin record holder with a time of 3:42.25, he notched his qualifying time at the Raleigh Relays in March.
On Friday, the Paladins will have two athletes competing in the quarterfinals of the 3,000m Steeplechase. The women's race will commence at 8:20 p.m., followed by the men at 9 p.m.
Freshman Gabrielle Jennings, who came to Furman from Sidell, La., posted a time of 10:25.02 in the event at the Raleigh Relays to qualify. Her time currently ranks 41st in the East. Senior Troy Reeder, a native of Fishers, Ind., holds the top time in the East in the event on the men's side. He posted a time of 8:40.57 at the Stanford Invitational in March to qualify for the prelims, and he holds the Furman record of 8:36.51 in the event.
The meet will conclude on Saturday, with Furman also competing in the 5,000m. The women's 5,000m semifinal will begin at 8:05 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the men's race at 8:45 p.m.
On the women's side, junior Allie Buchalski and freshman Savannah Carnahan will represent the Paladins. Buchalski, who hails from Johns Creek, Ga., leads the East with a time of 15:35.55 in the 5,000m, a new Paladin record which she set in March at the Raleigh Relays. Carnahan, a native of Cumming, Ga., ranks 43rd in the East with a time of 16:21.18, which she posted at the Virginia Challenge in April.
A native of Dana Point, Calif., freshman Mason Coppi notched a time of 14:10. 60 in the 5,000m at the Virginia Challenge to qualify for the prelims.
The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.

Three Catamounts Close Out Season at 2017 East Preliminary
LEXINGTON, Ky. – A pair of junior sprinters and a freshman jumper from the Western Carolina track & field program closed out their seasons Thursday night at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. All three were making their first career appearances at the NCAA event.
Junior Keion Crossen was the first Catamount to take to the track as he competed in the 100m. The event was broken down into six heats with the top three finishers in each heat advancing to the Friday semifinals. Crossen took part in the first heat and finished seventh with a time of 10.66. The Garysburg, N.C., native finished just ahead of Robert Harris III from the University of Albany. The top three finishers in his heat came from LSU, Auburn and North Carolina State. Overall, Crossen's time earned him 45th overall as he topped runners from Troy, Albany and Michigan.
Junior Dakota Lamont was next to the track as he competed in the 400m. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native finished eighth in his heat as he rounded the track in 48.95. Champ Page of Ohio State won the heat with a time of 47.01 while runners from North Carolina A&T and Western Kentucky took second and third, respectively. Overall, Lamont took 46th in the event as he topped Ashley Riley of Southeastern Louisiana and Michal Cheeks of Clemson.
The final Catamount in action was freshman Jazmine Gooden won competed in the women's long jump. Gooden finished 48th overall with a leap of 5.48m (17-11.75). Kate Hall of Georgia was the top finisher as she posted a distance of 6.68m (21-11.00).
Senior Hailey Cook will compete in the women's shot put Saturday afternoon as the final Catamount still in action.
