SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI right-handed pitcher Josh Winder has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held May 3-9, the league office announced Wednesday.
Winder took a four-hitter into the ninth inning on Friday against a UNCG team that had come into the series hitting well over .300. In the Keydets' 7-3 win over the Spartans, Winder finished with eight innings that saw him strike out 10 batters as he tallied his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the year. His performance on Friday gave him 100 strikeouts on the season, making him just the third VMI pitcher ever to accomplish the feat.
In the classroom, Winder boasts a 4.0 grade point average as an economics and business major.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
