SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI right-handed pitcher Josh Winder has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held March 29 through April 4, the league office announced Wednesday.
Winder fired a complete-game shutout against Samford on Friday, striking out 12 batters to record his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the 2017 season. The Richmond, Virginia, native allowed just three hits and one walk in leading the Keydets to their first shutout of a conference opponent since 2013. His 12 strikeouts against Samford also solidified his position in the top 10 in Division I in that statistic, as he has entered the weekend tied for ninth. Additionally, Winder’s nine innings of work on Friday gave him his third consecutive complete game of the season, which at the time, only one other pitcher in Division I had accomplished in 2017.
In the classroom, Winder boasts a 4.0 grade point average as an Economics and Business major. Winder also received the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award on March 8, earlier this year.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
