Furman's Speaks Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season, Furman’s Ansley Speaks has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. The senior went 4-0 in all competition last week as Furman picked up a pair of Southern Conference wins over Samford (6-1) and Chattanooga (6-1).

Speaks ran her record to 18-3 in singles play this spring with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1. The Simpsonville, S.C., native downed Samford’s Ellie Gerlach 6-2, 6-2 and topped Chattanooga’s Samantha Caswell, 6-2, 6-0. Speaks has now won 14 straight singles matches and has not been pushed to a third set since a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over UCF’s Monica Matias on March 9.

Furman’s top doubles team of Speaks and Aryn Green pushed its winning streak to 10 matches with a 6-4 win over Samford’s Gerlach and Savannah Wood, coupled with a 6-1 decision over UTC’s Caswell and Rachele Gazzola. Speaks and Green are 17-4 at No. 1 doubles this spring, including a 5-0 mark in Southern Conference play.

Furman (18-5, 5-0 SoCon) returns to action Saturday (April 8) when the Paladins host ETSU (9-4, 4-0 SoCon) in a matchup of two teams unbeaten in league play.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Marina Guinart, Mercer’s Katia Stavroulaki, UNCG’s Sophia Adams, Samford’s Grace Jennings, Chattanooga’s Samantha Caswell and Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks.
