Bucs Finish Day One of Events in Florida and North Carolina // Florida Relays Results // VertKlasse Meeting Results
GAINESVILLE, Fla. /HIGH POINT, N.C. – Splitting up the squad for the second straight weekend, the ETSU Track & Field program recorded 11 top ten finishes at both the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina. and 2017 Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida.
Against some of the best athletes in the nation the Buccaneers registered a successful day at the 2017 Pepsi Florida Relays as sophomore Kyra Atkins finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.82 meters.
On the track, Atkins finished 17th out of 63 runners in the 400m hurdles with a time of 13.42.
In Gainesville, Fla., senior Katrina Seymour finished sixth out of 50 runners in the 400mH with a time of 58.59. Seymour's time of 58.59 broke the ETSU school record, a record Seymour previoulsy broke in the first outdoor meet of the season at the Charlotte 49'er Classic. Also in the 400mH was junior Nicki Smith who finished 39th with a time of 1:03.72.
The men’s track and field program had an effective day on the track in High Point, North Carolina, at the VertKlasse Meeting. ETSU had two finish in the top ten in the 3000m steeplechase with freshman Adam Bradtmueller led the way with a personal best time of 9:50.53 to finish sixth. Right behind Bradtmueller in eighth was junior Carl Oberfeitinger with a personal best time of 9:58.27.
Sophomre Benjamin Johnson grabbed two top five finishes at the VertKlasse Meeting as Johnson finished fifth in the men’s javelin throw with a mark of 52.50m (171’ 3”). In the men’s hammer throw, Johnson finished fourth with a mark of 45.68m (149’ 10”).Also in the field junior Patrick Taylor finished eighth in the long jump at the Floriday Relays with a mark of 7.16m.
ETSU will continue split-squad competition tomorrow as the Florida Relays begin at 11:00 a.m. in the field with the men’s discus throw. The VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw.
Hinkle Breaks Paladin 5,000m Record at Stanford Invitational // Results
STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Tanner Hinkle broke the school record in the 5,000m to lead the Furman outdoor track and field team Friday at the Samford Invitational in Stanford, California.
Hinkle, who hails from Mason, Michigan., posted a time of 29:15.99 to take tenth place in his heat, breaking the previous record of 29:16.77, which he set in the spring of 2015.
Senior Troy Reeder also competed for the Paladins, posting a fourth-place finish with a time of 8:40.57 in the 3,000m Steeplechase.
Furman will compete at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Alabama., April 7-8.

UNCG's Sandin Takes Fifth in 5,000m at the Vertklasse Meeting // Results
HIGH POINT, N.C. – UNCG didn’t have to travel far for its latest competition of the season. The Spartans took a quick jaunt southwest on Friday to open up action at the High Point University hosted Vertklasse Meeting.
William Sandin had the highlight of the day, placing fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:32.65. Patrick O’Grady wasn’t far behind, finishing in 15:42.43 for 12th, while Alex Roy timed in at 15:45.32 for 18th.
In the 1,500 meters, Dakarai Shipp snagged 70th, crossing the finish line in 4:20.36. Sarah DeSantis was the only UNCG women’s trackster in action, earning a 38th-place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:55.55.
The Spartans resume competition at the Vertklasse Meeting on Saturday. A full recap of UNCG’s results from Friday can be found below.

Bulldogs Earn Trio of Top-10 Finishes at Florida Relays // Results
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Samford University track and field team registered a trio of top-10 finishes Friday as the Bulldogs’ Brandon Hazouri, Maggie Johnston and Karisa Nelson all excelled amongst the nation’s elite performers at the 2017 Florida Relays being held at Percy Beard Track.
Nelson, who recently earned the NCAA Indoor national championship in the women’s mile earlier this month, turned in Samford’s best outing Friday. Nelson, the Bulldogs’ talented junior from Brewton, Alabama, registered a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.14.
Only three collegiate performers finished better than Nelson in the event. Marilyn Okoro, who ran unattached, posted a winning time of 2:02.50, while Cory McGee of New Balance placed second at 2:02.55. Villanova junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner proved to be the best collegiate in the event with a time of 2:03.07.
On Friday, Samford’s Hazouri and Johnston both posted eighth-place performances in their respective events.
Hazouri, the Bulldogs’ outstanding All-Southern Conference competitor, finished eighth in the men’s 800-meter event with a time of 1:48.32. Penn State’s Isaiah Harris won the competition with a tally of 1:45.64.
Samford’s Johnston, who is the reigning SoCon Outdoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, notched her eighth-place performance in the discus throw Friday. Johnston, the Bulldogs’ highly-touted true freshman from Macon, Georgia, turned in a distance of 47.19 meters to notch a top-10 outing in the competition.
Maryland’s Claudia Ababio registered a first-place mark in the event with a distance of 53.47 meters.
On Saturday, a pair of Samford field athletes will be competing in the world-renown Texas Relays. Junior Tray Oates, the reigning SoCon Outdoor Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, will be among the nation’s elite competing in the pole vault, while Keyth Fightmaster is expected to battle for the championship title in the high jump.
The 2017 Texas Relays will be held Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Also, Samford’s Arsene Guillorel is scheduled to compete in the premier long distance meet of the weekend, the Stanford Invitational. Guillorel recently dominated the in-state competition at the Samford Alabama Track Challenge over the weekend.
Guillorel, the Bulldogs’ talented junior from Pontchateau, France, cruised to a 14-second triumph in the men’s mile as he recorded a dominant time of 4:10.20, while South Alabama’s Luke Fielding placed second at 4:24.17.
Western Carolina Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Returned to Action Friday // Results
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams returned to outdoor competition Friday at High Point University for the second-straight event hosted by the Panthers. WCU compiled 13 top-10 finishes at the VertKlasse Meeting including a pair of event victories. Freshman Jazmine Gooden and senior Hailey Cook led the way as they each won individual events.
Gooden led a trio of Catamounts in the top-10 of the women’s long jump as she touched down at 5.75m. Senior Tiffani Lewis came in second in the event as she turned in a distance of 5.71m. Senior Chenell Bryan rounded out the trio with a 10th-place showing at 5.35m.
Cook took the crown in the women’s shot put with a toss of 14.90m. Sophomore Simone Williams took seventh as well as she stopped the tape at 13.03m.
Junior Chase Stehling was the men’s top finisher of the day as he took second in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 48.77m.
Freshman Di'Joun Huitt took fifth in the high jump as he topped 1.89m.
Senior Scott Peretin and junior Mateius Brown finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men’s shot put. Peretin registered a toss of 15.22m while Brown measured in at 15.11m.
Junior Alisha Blackmon earned a sixth-place finish in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 45.14m while freshman Mahogani Holiday came in ninth after tossed the weight 44.32m.
Junior Kevin Hires earned an eighth place finish in the men’s long jump with a distance of 6.68m while freshman Imani Bennett came in eighth in the women’s high jump to round out WCU’s top-10 finishes. Bennett cleared 1.47m.
The Catamounts will wrap up competition at the VertKlasse Meeting Saturday afternoon.
