SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI right-handed pitcher Josh Winder has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held March 1-7, the league office announced Wednesday.

Winder struck out a career-high 11 batters and recorded no walks in eight innings pitched for the Keydets against George Washington on Friday. The Richmond, Virginia, native moved to 3-0 on the season after leading the Keydets to a dominant 10-0 win in Lexington, Virginia, over the Colonials.

Winder has struck out 21 opposing batters in his last two starts, 30 for the season, having only walked only one in his last 18 innings. Winder has held opponents to one run over his last 22 frames of work, dating back to his first start of the 2017 season.

In the classroom, Winder boasts a 4.0 grade point average as an economics and business major.

The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
