Lacrosse Players of the Week Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer midfielder Lucas Wittenberg and Furman goalkeeper Alec Van de Bovenkamp have been named Southern Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Feb. 28 through March 6 the league office announced Wednesday. Selections are made by the conference office.

Wittenberg, a sophomore, led the Mercer offense in an 11-6 loss against Michigan, tallying two goals and tying his season high of one assist. In addition to his three points for the game, Wittenberg also tied his season high with one ground ball. The Kennesaw, Georgia, native recorded three shots on goal against the Wolverines, achieving a .600 shot on goal percentage.

Van de Bovenkamp led the SoCon in both save percentage (65.0) and goals against average (7.00) in the Paladins' 7-5 loss against Michigan last week. Van de Bovenkamp, a true freshman, allowed just seven goals and recorded 13 saves after facing 40 Wolverine shots.

The Hinsdale, Illinois, native is currently second in the league save percentage (58.8) and goals against average (7.62).

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week:  Lou Yovino (Furman).

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Ben Gleichenhaus (Jacksonville) and Walker Ensor (Mercer).
