Mercer finishes 10th at Anuenue Spring Break Classic

KAPALUA, Hawai’i – Terese Romeo posted an even-par round of 72 and Mercer finished 10th as the Anuenue Spring Break Classic came to a close on the island of Maui on Wednesday.

All four countable scorecards for Mercer finished at 76 or better as Mercer’s round of 299 was the best of its three rounds and a six-stroke improvement from the previous day.

The Bears were the only team in the tournament to improve its team score by at least five strokes in each successive round and one of only three teams in the 15-team field to improve its team score in each round overall.

The Bears held steady in 10th place and finished at 50-over-par 914 while edging host Hawai’i (+54) by four strokes. Santa Clara finished ninth in the tournament, just two strokes ahead of Mercer. No. 7 UCLA won the tournament at 12-under-par, while No. 4 Arizona State was the runner-up at 5-over-par.

Lauren Lightfritz was the top-placing Bear as she finished the tournament at 7-over-par (233) and was one of four countable scores in the final round at 76 or better. But it was Romeo that finished the strongest for Mercer as her 75 in the second round tied with Lightfritz for the team best in the round and then her even-par 72 was the best of any of the Bears. Romeo moved from 60th after the first round to tied for 29th to finish the tournament, beating No. 20 Sophia Zeeb (Arizona State) by two strokes. No. 15 Lilia Vu (UCLA) was the medalist at 12-under-par, while No. 39 Monica Vaughn (Arizona State) was the runner-up at 5-under-par.

Mercer returns to action on April 10-11 as the Bears return home to host the Brickyard Collegiate.
