SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU outfielder/pitcher Tiffany Laughren has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held March 15-21, the league office announced Wednesday.
Laughren helped guide the Bucs to a pair of sweeps over Radford and Tennessee Tech this past weekend at Betty Basler Field. The sophomore hit .412 (7-for-17) with three doubles, five walks, two runs scored and two RBIs in six games. In the circle, she went 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA and eight strikeouts in three starts and 10 innings pitched. The Erwin, Tennessee, native reached base safely in five of the six games, while totaling a career-high four hits in the 7-3 game one victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday. She then followed that up with a strong pitching performance to cap off the sweep in the 3-2 game two victory. Laughren held Tennessee Tech scoreless for the first four innings, while striking out a career-high five hitters before allowing two runs, one of which was earned, in the fifth inning.
Against Radford on Friday, Laughren surrendered just two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings to secure a 10-2 six-inning win in game two. Laughren, who was on a pitch count against the Highlanders, picked up her first two wins of the season over the weekend. At the plate in the game two win over Radford, she reached base safely three times as she went 1-for-2 with a double, one run scored, two RBI and two walks.
Laughren went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in ETSU’s 9-7 game two loss at Virginia Tech on Tuesday and got the start in the circle against the Hokies. Laughren allowed just two earned runs on two hits in three innings pitched.
In the classroom, Laughren boasts a 3.826 grade point average as a Management & Marketing major.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
