SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina left-handed pitcher Bryan Sammons has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Feb. 22-28, the league office announced Wednesday.
Sammons tossed a one-hit shutout through six innings in his second start of the season against Marshall on Friday, Feb. 24, leading the Catamounts to an 8-0, four-hit shutout victory in the home-opener. Sammons struck out a season-high nine batters, while limiting the Thundering Herd to a .056 batting average.
The Wilmington, North Carolina, native currently holds a team-best 2.70 ERA and collected his 21st career victory to move into sole possession of ninth-place in program history for career wins. Sammons also notched his 44th career start, putting him at No. 6 all-time in career starts in Catamount history.
In the classroom, Sammons boasts a 3.54 grade point average as an electrical technology major.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
