SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State heavyweight Denzel Dejournette has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Feb. 1-7. The selection is made by the league office.

Dejournette, ranked 13th nationally last week, won his lone bout of the week, toppling ninth-ranked Jared Johnson of Chattanooga, 10-4, to lead off the Mountaineers’ dramatic 17-16 win over the Mocs. The teams wrestled to a 16-16 deadlock, with Appalachian State claiming the match on criteria to clinch at least a share of its second straight SoCon regular-season title and its ninth overall.

Dejournette moved back into the top 10 nationally with the win, jumping up to No. 9.

The weekly award is the sixth of Dejournette’s career, moving the reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Year into a tie for third on the SoCon’s all-time list. The redshirt senior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, becomes the fourth different Mountaineer to earn the award this season.

Appalachian State (12-2, 6-0 SoCon) can clinch the SoCon title outright with a win over VMI (1-10, 0-4) on Wednesday. That bout is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Lexington, Virginia. The Mountaineers are seeking their fifth undefeated league slate and first since 2011-12.

Also nominated: Quentin Perez (Campbell), Aaron Walker (The Citadel), Camden Bertucci (Davidson), Austin Trott (Gardner-Webb) and Chris Debien (Chattanooga).
