UNCG's Alonso Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Francis Alonso has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all games played Feb. 21-27. Alonso averaged 21.7 points in three games as the Spartans picked up wins over Mercer (72-66), VMI (73-67) and ETSU (72-66) to secure a share of the league’s regular season title.  UNCG ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak.

Alonso connected on 55 percent of his field goals (16-of-29), went 11-of-17 from 3-point range (.647) and averaged 2.7 assists on the week.  After scoring 25 points on the road at Mercer, he chipped in 17 in the win over VMI.  The sophomore finished the regular season with a 23-point performance in the win over ETSU Monday night.  UNCG is 12-0 this season when Alonso makes at least three triples.

He ranks eighth in the league in scoring (14.9 ppg), second in 3-point shooting percentage (.484) and third in made 3-pointers per game (3.0).

UNCG (23-8, 14-4 SoCon) returns to action Saturday (March 4) in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included The Citadel’s Preston Parks, ETSU’s Tevin Glass, Mercer’s Jordan Strawberry, Samford’s Demetrius Denzel-Dyson, Chattanooga’s Justin Tuoyo, Western Carolina’s Marc Gosselin and Wofford’s Cameron Jackson.
