SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Connor Thompson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played Feb. 20-26. Thompson was 3-0 in singles play at the top position, and went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles as the Spartans went 2-1 last week. UNCG dropped a 6-1 decision to Campbell, in which Thompson recorded UNCG’s only point, before downing Coastal Carolina (4-3) and Gardner-Webb (5-2).
The junior ran his record to 4-1 at No. 1 singles this spring with his three victories last week. Thompson opened the week with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Campbell’s Nicolas Rakitin. He followed that performance with a 6-3,1-6,6-2 decision over Coastal Carolina’s Vuk Velickovic. Thompson finished the week in singles play with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 decision over Gardner-Webb’s Max Scholl.
Thompson teamed with Marcus Vidgren at No. 1 doubles and UNCG’s top pair went 2-1 to move to 3-2 on the season. Thompson and Vidgren fell to Campbell’s Dustin Wener and Lorenz Schwab, 3-6, before claiming a 7-5 victory over Coastal Carolina’s Sebastian Scheider and Zak Talic. They closed the week with a 6-4 victory over Gardner-Webb’s Scholl and Paul Hogan
UNCG (4-2) returns to action Friday (March 3) when the Spartans visit Charlotte.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Adam Steryous, Mercer’s Olivier Stuart, Samford’s Jake Faundez, Chattanooga’s Simon Bustamante and Wofford’s Parks Schoen.
