Men's Indoor Track and Field Southern Conference

Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Ryan Adams and The Citadel’s Derrick Freeland have been named the Southern Conference men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the week, respectively, while VMI’s Bria Anderson swept both track and field honors on the women’s side, the conference office announced Wednesday. Selections were made a group of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held Feb. 15-21.

Adams, a sophomore, won the men’s mile at Clemson’s Tiger Tune-Up on Friday with a time of 4:02.73, setting a new Paladin record in the event. Adams broke Troy Reeder’s former program record of 4:02.91, which Reeder set last month. Adams’ time of 4:02.73 is the top mile time in the Southern Conference this indoor season.

Freeland set a Citadel record in the men’s weight throw at Clemson’s Tiger-Tune up on Friday with a mark of 58-7.5 (17.87m). His toss earned him a third-place finish at the meet and is the second-best mark in the conference heading into this weekend’s SoCon indoor championship meet.

Anderson, a junior, sweeps women’s honors after placing first and third in the women’s 60m dash and long jump, respectively, at the Virginia Tech Challenge this past weekend. In the 60m, won the event with a time of 7.70 seconds, which is good for seventh-best in the SoCon this season. The Richmond, Virginia, native leaped a distance of 18-8.5 (5.70m) in the long jump, which is her season-best for the 2016-17 indoor season.

The Southern Conference indoor track and field season resumes on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the 2017 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championship meet will be held on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 25-26) in Johnson City, Tennessee, at ETSU’s Mountain Health Alliance Athletics Center.
