Furman's Speaks Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman senior Ansley Speaks has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played Feb. 13-19. Speaks posted a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1 singles and was 1-1 in doubles competition last week.

The Paladins posted a pair of wins last week over Liberty (4-3) and Tusculum (6-1). Competing at the top singles spot, Speaks claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win over Liberty’s Rebekah Anderson and posted a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Tusculum’s Katarina Majorova.

Paired with Aryn Greene at No 1 doubles, Furman’s top pair dropped a 6-3 decision to Liberty’s Anderson and Aleksandra Pachenko, before claiming a 6-2 win over Tusculum’s Majorova and Franziska Funke.

Furman (7-4) returns to action Saturday (Feb. 25) when the Paladins visit Clemson.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Marina Guinart, Mercer’s Andrea Peteu, Samford’s Ellie Gerlach, Chattanooga’s Delaney Edwards and Catherine Martin.
