SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG utility player Jasmine Palmer and Furman ace Lindsey Bert have been named Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games held Feb. 13-19, the league announced Monday. Selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Palmer started five games at second base for the Spartans last week, leading UNCG to a 4-1 record at the Battle at the Beach tournament in Conway, South Carolina. The Biltmore Lake, North Carolina, native went 6-for-11 (.545) from the plate, slugged 1.091 and achieved a .706 on-base percentage. Palmer totaled six hits, six RBIs, five runs scored, two doubles and one home run on the weekend. The sophomore was also hit by four pitches, including two in the Spartans’ opening game of the weekend against Rider on Friday, in which UNCG won 19-1. Palmer currently ranks fourth in the SoCon with four doubles on the season.
Bert started three games for the Paladins in 13 innings pitched, registering wins against Campbell and Towson on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Bert surrendered just three earned runs on the weekend, giving her an ERA of 1.62. The junior left-hander tossed five innings, allowing only two runs in the Furman’s 5-3 victory over Campbell on Saturday. Bert capped off the weekend by hurling a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts in Furman’s 12-0 five-inning win over Towson. At the plate, Bert went 5-for-10 with two doubles and three RBIs at the USC Upstate/Furman Classic in Greenville, South Carolina.
