SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford freshman Elsa Pool has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played through Feb. 12. Pool has started the year 4-2 in singles play and has an identical 4-2 mark in doubles competition.
The Kingscote, England, native has split time between No. 2 and No. 3 singles and has gone 2-0 at No. 2, including a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Sonia Chen of Louisiana Tech. She strung together four straight singles wins before falling to South Alabama’s Laura Valkova (2-6, 2-6) on Saturday.
Pool has competed at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with three different partners, but has managed to put together a 4-2 mark in doubles competition. After starting the season at No. 3 doubles, she was moved up to No. 2 and paired with Arianna Beltrame. The duo came away with back-to-back wins for the Bulldogs before Pool was then paired with Grace Jennings.
Samford (4-2) returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 15) when the Bulldogs host Jacksonville State.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Ansley Speaks, UNCG’s Sarah Swiderski, Chattanooga’s Sydney Patton, Western Carolina’s Madison Riley and Wofford’s Kalli Karas.
