WACO, Texas – Six Southern Conference football student-athletes were named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America teams, announced by the AFCA on Wednesday.

Furman offensive lineman Matthew Schmidt, Samford defensive lineman Ahmad Gooden and Western Carolina all-purpose player Detrez Newsome landed on the first team. That trio has also earned All-America honors from STATS, the Associated Press and Phil Steele this offseason.

Samford wide receiver Kelvin McKnight and quarterback Devlin Hodges and Western Carolina defensive back Marvin Tillman were second-team selections. McKnight’s All-American selection was his third (STATS, Phil Steele), while Hodges and Tillman were honored for the first time this postseason.
