SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb freshman Denton Spencer has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Dec. 13-19, the league office announced Wednesday.

Spencer went 5-0 to win the 141-pound weight class at the Cleveland Open on Saturday. The freshman from Waverly, Georgia, began the day with three pins before earning a 4-2 sudden victory win over Kent State’s Tim Rooney. In the championship match, Spencer outscored Northwestern’s Yahya Thomas 6-3 en route to the title. 

Spencer, whose overall record is 16-5, has gone 11-0 since falling in the opening round of the Wolfpack Open on Nov. 19. Spencer and Gardner-Webb return to the mat on Jan. 1, traveling to Chattanooga to compete in the Southern Scuffle.

Also nominated: Forresy Przybysz (Appalachian State), Jere Heino (Campbell), Sawyer Root (The Citadel) and Alonzo Allen (Chattanooga).
