SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior forward Marvin Smith was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Dec. 12-18 after leading the Spartans to a pair of wins, including a victory at NC State. The award is selected by the league office.
Smith averaged 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as UNCG downed defending Colonial Athletic Association regular-season and tournament champion UNCW and NC State.
In the victory over the Seahawks, the Richmond, Virginia, native scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds, hitting three 3-pointers on the day. On Saturday at NC State, Smith registered his first double-double of the season, and fifth of his career, with 16 points and 10 boards. The win was UNCG’s first ever over the Wolfpack and just its third over an Atlantic Coast Conference team.
For the week, Smith shot 52.2 percent from the floor and 5-for-13 from 3-point range.
The Spartans (8-3), winners of four straight, take on UNC Asheville on Tuesday at the Greensboro Coliseum at 7 p.m.
