Western Carolina's Bonner named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women’s basketball player Sherae Bonner has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Dec. 6-12, the league office announced Wednesday.

Bonner led the Catamounts to a 39-27 win over Radford last week as she finished with eight points, 15 rebounds and three blocks as Western Carolina snapped a six-game skid. Two of Bonner’s three blocks came in the first three minutes of the game as Western Carolina tied the school record, which was set back in 1969, for least amount of points allowed. Her 115 career blocks rank fourth in the Western Carolina record books.

The senior’s 730 career rebounds rank ninth in program history and marks the first time that a Catamount has recorded over 700 rebounds in a career since 2008. The Whitesburg, Georgia, native is also chasing the 1,000-point plateau and currently has 738 points in her career.

An elementary education major, Bonner holds a 3.70 grade point average.

Following an eight-day break, Western Carolina will now have three games in six days beginning with a trip to South Carolina State on Dec. 16.

Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Sydni Means (Mercer women’s basketball).
