Furman's Sibley named player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman senior guard Devin Sibley was named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 21-27 after averaging 21 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in a pair of neutral-court wins. The award is selected by the league office.

Sibley, the reigning SoCon Player of the Year and the preseason recipient of that award heading into this season, opened his week with 20 points and nine rebounds in Furman’s 78-64 win over New Hampshire on Friday in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of the PK80: Phil Knight Invitational. Sibley shot 7-for-14 from the floor and hit three of his five 3-point attempts in just 29 minutes of work. He also went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line and was credited with three assists.

The following day, the Knoxville, Tennessee, native scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season as the Paladins downed Northeastern by a 78-67 score. Sibley was 8-for-18 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also handed out three more assists.

Sibley, who is third in the SoCon in scoring at 18.2 points per game this season, has scored at least 20 points in four of Furman’s six games so far. With an average of 5.8 rebounds per game, he’s one of just three players to rank in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding in the league.

Other nominees: Tariq Simmons (The Citadel), Jalan McCloud (ETSU), Ethan Stair (Mercer), Francis Alonso (UNCG), Justin Coleman (Samford), Rodney Chatman (Chattanooga), Devin Peterson (Western Carolina) and Nathan Hoover (Wofford).
