WCU Opens Competition at Thundering Herd Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams opened up competition at the Thundering Herd Invitational Friday afternoon hosted by Marshall University. The men sit in third in the team standings after day one while the women are sixth. WCU placed seven competitors in the top-10 on day one.

Senior Tiffani Lewis led a trio of Catamounts in the women’s long jump as she placed third overall with a leap of 5.79m (19-00.00). Classmate Chenell Bryan came in two spots back in fifth with a mark of 5.70m (18-08.50). The final top-10 finisher was freshman Jazmine Gooden who came in eighth after stopping the tape at 5.55m (18-02.50).

The men placed three competitors in the top-10 of the weight throw led by sophomore Dakota Wright who tossed the element 17.22m (56-06.00). Junior Chase Stehling came in one spot back in fourth with a mark of 17.00m (55-09.25) while senior Scott Peretin finished in sixth after a toss of 16.83m (55-02.75).

The final top-10 finisher of the day was junior Meghan Breden who took eighth in the women’s pole vault. Breden cleared 3.50m (11-05.75) to claim the spot.

The women sit in sixth out of 15 teams after day one. They rank just ahead of Austin Peay, Toledo and Charlotte. The men rank third out of eight teams and are just ahead of Cincinnati, Ohio and Appalachian State.

The Catamounts will return to action today, Saturday, Jan. 28 as they wrap up competition at the Thundering Herd Invitational.
