GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman downed Elon, 5-2, Thursday in the Paladins home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to claim the opening point. Senior Adam Steryous and sophomore Jake Munns topped Felipe Sarrasague and Mario Paccini, 6-2, in the top seeded contest, and junior Cameron Green and sophomore Alex Steryous recorded a 6-4 win over Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys at number two. At flight three, freshmen Clarke Wilson and Trevor Croyder beat Neal Port and Salvador Mijares, 6-1.
In singles action, the Paladins scored wins in the top three flights and at number six. Adam Steryous came from behind for a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Sarrasague at flight one, and Green bested Paccini, 7-5, 6-2, at number two. In the third-seeded match-up, Wilson defeated Mijares, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, and at flight six, junior Josh Pistorius downed Humphreys, 6-4, 6-1.
The Phoenix scored at flights four and five, as Tomic beat Munns, 6-2, 6-2 at number four, and Felipe Osses-Konig held on for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Alex Steryous at flight five.
Furman (1-2) will travel to West Point, N.Y., this weekend to take on Army, Yale, and Loyola Marymount.
