SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU sophomore Marina Guinart has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Jan. 18-24, the league office announced Wednesday.

Guinart went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles play in a round robin tournament at Virginia Tech on Saturday and Sunday. The sophomore defeated Virginia Tech’s Elena Cerezo-Codina, 5-7, 6-2, 11-9, on court  two before falling, 6-4, in doubles action on court one with teammate Ioanna Markesini. In the Bucs’ 4-3 win over Troy on Sunday, Guinart exhibited a dominating singles performance, defeating Hannah Seizer, 6-2, 6-1, on court two. Guinart and Markesini bounced back after Saturday’s doubles loss, winning 6-3 on court one to aid the Bucs in claiming the doubles point

After splitting in Blacksburg this weekend, ETSU (1-1) will take two weeks off before it hits the court again. The Bucs will travel to Lynchburg, Va., where they will take on Liberty on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m.

The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
