THE CITADEL STARTS STRONG IN SEASON OPENER

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Bulldogs’ track and field teams competed in the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday to start the indoor season.
The men’s 4x400 relay team consisted of Josiah Johnson, Trey Singleton, Stephan Kulick, and Sam Santiago and finished second overall in 3 minutes 26 seconds. Senior Malik Diggs finished third overall in the 60-meter hurdle event with a time of 8.36 earning him the all-time No. 2 spot in program history.
Sophomore Stephan Kulick competed in the 800 meter race and took third place in 1:58.41. Ross Jordan finished fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:51.93. In the field events, Derrick Freeland finished fourth in the weight throw with three 54-4.25 throws, and Ja'Lon Williams threw 48-4 in the shot put to take fourth place.
For the women’s squad, senior Caillian Colquitt ran 19:06 in the 5k to finish fifth and sophomore Grace Jenkins ran 19:43 to finish eighth. Jessy Page broke The Citadel’s freshman record in the 20-lb. weight throw with a toss of 47-2.25 to earn the all-time No. 4 spot. The 4x400 relay with Sarah Johnson, Emani Little, Hannah Murry and Ty Harris ran 4:13 to finish seventh overall.

BUCHALSKI & REEDER SET FURMAN RECORDS AT VANDERBILT INVITATIONAL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Allie Buchalski set a new Paladin record in the women’s 3,000m and senior Troy Reeder topped the Furman school record in the mile to lead the Paladin indoor track and field team Saturday in the final day of the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
Buchalski took first place with a time of 9:13.39 in the 3,000m, knocking almost eight seconds off of her previous Paladin record of 9:21.20, set in February of 2016. Reeder, who placed sixth in the mile, posted a time of 4:02.96, breaking Patrick Morgan’s record of 4:04.45, which had stood since 2009.
All told, six Furman men notched top-10 finishes on Saturday. The Paladins placed three runners among the top eight in the 3,000m, including senior Tanner Hinkle, who was third with a time of 8:20.00, and senior Brock Baker, who finished fifth at 8:20.20. Junior Aaron Templeton turned in a time of 8:26.53 for eighth place.
Rookie Madison Daniel placed ninth with a time of 1:53.63 in the 800m, and sophomore Ryan Adams was also ninth in the mile with a time of 4:04.61.
Freshman Gabrielle Jennings recorded a time of 4:51.92, just shy of the Furman record of 4:51.53, to finish fifth in the mile, while fellow freshman Emma Grace Hurley was tenth in the event at 4:57.58.
Furman will compete at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Feb. 4. Full Details
BULLDOGS EARN TOP FINISHES AT VANDERBILT INVITATIONAL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford University track and field team received brilliant performances from Emmanuel Tait, Tray Oates, Javion Lee, Paul Richardson, Josh Salter, Ben Bryant, Courtney Prengaman, Karisa Nelson and Emma Garner this weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational as the Bulldogs continued their great start to the 2017 indoor season Saturday.
The 2017 Vanderbilt Invitational was held Jan. 20-21, at the Vanderbilt University Multipurpose Facility.
Samford’s Tait, a true freshman for the Bulldogs who prepped at Thompson High School, notched a second-place finish Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles with a blazing time of 7.91. South Carolina’s Isaiah Moore won the competition with a time of 7.80.
In the men’s 5,000-meter run, Samford’s Richardson and Salter placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Richardson turned in a time of 14:55.01, while Salter earned a tally of 15:12.66.
Bryant, the Bulldogs’ dynamic sophomore runner earned a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:20.57.
Samford’s Oates, who is one of the best pole vaulters in the nation, earned a third-place height of 5.20 meters Saturday and proved to be the top collegiate competitor in the 2017 Vanderbilt Invitational. The Bulldogs’ senior Chris Thrasher tallied an eighth-place mark in the event.
In the men’s triple jump, Samford’s Lee posted a mark of 14.73 meters to place sixth in the event. South Carolina’s Michael Wamer won the competition with a distance of 15.87 meters.
Samford’s Prengaman also notched a sixth-place performance Saturday by jumping a height of 1.66 meters in the women’s high jump. Additionally, the Bulldogs’ Nelson turned in a brilliant time of 9:15.34 to finish in second place in the 3,000-meter run.
Garner, Samford’s talented junior runner from Opelika, Alabama, continued her success in the 2017 indoor season with a third-place performance in the 1-mile run. She posted a time of 4:51.15 in the event and trailed only Claire Green of Arizona and Mia Meydrich of Mississippi State.
The Samford University track and field team will next be in action Jan. 29, as the Bulldogs are slated to compete in the 2017 Kevin Stephen Invite, which will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Full Details
HENDERSON LEADS KEYDETS AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Greg Henderson qualified for the IC4A Championships in two events, pacing VMI track and field on the final day of the Liberty Kickoff, contested Saturday in Lynchburg, Va.
Henderson punched his ticket to the IC4A meet in the 60 and 200 meter dashes on Saturday, finishing 7th and 12th respectively in the two events. Henderson ran a 6.89 second 60-meter, lowering his personal best, and was one of 16 athletes to hit the IC4A standard in the 200 with his 22.13 effort.
Other results on the men's side included Grant Holmes' fourth-place result in the pole vault. Holmes was one of three athletes to clear the 4.60 meter (15'1") bar, but dropped back to fourth place due to number of misses and fell out of the event at the IC4A qualification height of 4.80 meters.
The 3,000-meter run saw Brandon White finish second, as he crossed the stripe in 8:52.44 to open his senior season. In addition, Grant Sanchez finished sixth in the shot put (14.75 M/48'4 3/4") and the Keydets had two finishers within the top 10 in the men's 800-meters. Jay Broom was seventh in 1:58.01 and Luke Lysher was 10th in 1:59.79. Finally, Desmond Weinberg-Jones finished eighth in the heptathlon (4149 points).
On the women's side, Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles and qualified for the ECAC Championships in the process. Agyepong-Wiafe crossed the line in 9.01 in the final, but made the ECAC meet with her 8.82 clocking in the prelims. The junior also made the finals of the 60 dash, finishing 15th in 7.99 seconds.
Logan Luckett was 11th in the 800-meters in her first collegiate track event, timing in at 2:21.63 and immediately ranking seventh in school history in the event. Finally, Kennedy Smith finished 12th in the triple jump (10.46 M/34'4") and Julia Logan tied for seventh in the high jump (1.55 M/5'1").
VMI track and field will return to action January 28, when the Keydets play host to The Citadel for a dual that will open the Corps Physical Training Facility. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. Full Details
