ETSU at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Simeon Roberts led the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Hokie Invitational as he finished in first place in the mile run, while Matthew Moore qualified for the 60m finals in Blacksburg, Va.
Highlights of Day One
- To start the track events for ETSU, Kaitlyn Lay had the best finish in a competitive field. The Knoxville, Tenn. native placed 17th in the women’s one-mile run with a time of 5:20.42. The top-5 runners of the women’s one mile were within 1.5 seconds of each other, and North Carolina State had four runners place in the top-5.
- Lamisha Simmons nearly made the cut in the women’s 60m hurdles. She finished 13 out of 29 runners and was clocked at 8.84.
- ETSU had its first qualifier of the day in the men’s 60m prelims as Moore placed seventh. He crossed the finish line with a time of 6.86. Under an hour later, the Oak Ridge, Tenn. native competed in the finals of the 60m and finished in sixth place.
- After having success in the 800m in the ETSU Track and Field Invitational, Thomas Miller found success in another race: the men’s 600m. He finished third with a time of 1:19.78, which is a personal best. Teammate Harper Sigler finished in fifth and just over a second behind Miller.
- Benjamin Johnson nearly cracked the top-5 in the men’s weighted throw. He finished in sixth with a throw of 17.06m, which crushed his personal best of 15.68m. Ryan Davis of East Carolina finished in fifth with a toss of 17.92m.
- As the highlight of day one, Roberts claimed the top spot in the men’s 3000m final. He won the final with a time of 8:26.65, which was over a second faster than the runner behind him. This was Roberts’ second first place finish of the 2017 indoor season. He won first place in the men’s one-mile run last week in Johnson City.
- To wrap up day one of the Hokie Invitational, Kiana Davis hustled into ninth place out of 28 runners in the women’s 300m. She finished the race at 39.99, which is a new personal best for the rookie. Full Details
Furman at Vanderbilt Invitational
NASHVILLE, TENN. – Freshman Mason Coppi turned in a time of 14:41.60 to win the men’s 5,000m to lead the Paladin indoor track and field team Friday in the opening day of the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. The Paladins placed three runners among the top eight in the event, as rookie Luke Meade was third with a time of 14:52.91, and senior Lee Shearer clocked in at 15:34.39 to claim eighth place.
Freshman Jennifer Stephenson placed eighth in the 5,000m with a time of 17:53.43 to pace the Paladin women’s team, and rookie Anna Hayden finished 16th in the event after posting a time of 18:54.78.
Junior Austin Chewing finished 27th with a mark of 17-4 in the long jump, while Heather Paget-Brown placed 55th with a time of 27.72 in the 200m. Also in the 200m, junior Shannon Smith captured 56th place at 28.18, followed by rookie Sarah Wilson in 57th at 28.56, and freshman Marry Morrow in 58th place with a time of 29.33.
The meet will conclude on Saturday. The women’s 3,000m run will begin at 9:45 a.m. The final event of the meet, the men’s 4x400m relay, is set to commence at 5:25 p.m. Full Details

VMI at Liberty Invite
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Julia Logan finished 11th in the pentathlon, pacing VMI track and field on the opening day of the 2017 season at the Liberty Kickoff, contested Friday in Lynchburg, Va. The meet was the first day of collegiate competition at the Liberty Indoor Track Center, Liberty's new indoor facility.
Logan finished the competition with 2,883 points. Her best score of the day came in her top event, the high jump, where she recorded 712 points thanks to a 1.58 meter (5'2 1/4") effort.
Other results on the women's side included Tiffany Quick finishing 12th in the shot put (13.28 M/43'7") and Elizabeth Johnston placing 13th (12.96 M/42'6 1/4").
On the men's side, Levi Whitt and Desmond Weinberg-Jones were in action on the opening day of the heptathlon. Whitt ranks 11th after the first day of competition, thanks to 2,378 points that included the third-fastest time in the 60-meter dash (7.25). Weinberg-Jones is currently in 16th place with 2,243 markers.
