SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga senior heavyweight Jared Johnson has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Jan. 11-17, the league office announced Wednesday.
Johnson went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals last weekend, scoring two wins over ranked opponents, including a 4-1 decision against No. 19 Ross Larson of Oklahoma and a 3-0 decision against No. 16 Thomas Haines of Lock Haven. The Jefferson City, Mo., native capped his 4-0 weekend with a 7-2 decision over Bucknell’s Tyler Green in the Mocs’ 20-17 loss against the Bison on Saturday. Johnson is currently 19-4 on the year and No. 10 in the nation at heavyweight.
Chattanooga stays on the road next weekend, returning to Southern Conference action at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Action takes place on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 5 p.m. The next home date for the Mocs is a doubleheader with Campbell and Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Mocs face the Camels at Noon and the Wildcats at 2 p.m. in Maclellan Gym.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
