Bucs Successful on Final Day of ETSU Track & Field Invitational | Results
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams competed on day two of the ETSU Track and Field Invitational as three Bucs earned first place honors and 12 top-5 finishes on Saturday in Johnson City.
Highlights of Day Two
- To start day two for ETSU, a pair of Buccaneers cracked the top-10 in the women’s one mile run. Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) placed fifth with a 5:21.56 time, andKaitlyn Lay (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished with a 5:25.90 time to fall into tenth place.
- On the men’s side of the one mile, freshman Noah Charles (Johnson City, Tenn.) finished fourth after clocking a 4:35.96. He was just four seconds away from claiming the top spot in the event and under a second from cracking the top three.
- Heading into the afternoon portion of day two, ETSU had both its men’s and women’s 4000m distance medley relay teams finish second. The women’s medley team finished with a 12:58.10 time, just 4.5 seconds behind SoCon foe Wofford. The men were clocked at an impressive 10:13.93.
- After qualifying for the finals in the women’s 60mH on day one, Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C.) and Lamisha Simmons (Dania Beach, Fla) stayed hot as they claimed the top two spots, respectively. Atkins dashed to the finish line with an 8.36 time, and Simmons finished behind her teammate at 8.76.
- After outhustling the pack yesterday in the 60 meter dash, Katrina Seymour (New Providence, Bahamas) held her position at the top in the finals. She clocked in at 7.59, which was five milliseconds faster than her preliminary heat.
- Michael Williams (Mt. Juliet, N.J.) went neck and neck with three other runners in the final and finished second in the men’s 60mH. He was one millisecond from tying the top spot but also only held a two millisecond lead over fourth place.
- Freshman Kiana Davis (Ooltewah, Tenn.) showed success in the finals of the women’s 200 meters. She improved her time from the prelims by 0.26 seconds but, ultimately, fell to second place in the finals. Simmons finished middle of the pack in the finals as she was clocked at 25.47.
- The junior from Stuart, Va., Victoria Hutchens (Stuart, Va.), moved into the top-5 in the women’s 3000 meter run. Five runners from Hutchens’ heat claimed all the top times in the overall results.
- In the one mile run, junior Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) cruised to the number one position as he posted a 4:20.45 time.
- In one of the last events of the night, the ETSU women’s 4 x 400m relay team claimed the second slot and edged Kennesaw State by almost 0.50 seconds. Virginia Commonwealth University earned the top slot at 3:50.56.
- David Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in the top-5 in the men’s 300 meter with a time of 8:47.82. On the women’s side of the 300 meters, Hutchens placed sixth with a time of 10:31.70, which was 1.22 seconds away from moving into the top-5.
What’s next for the Bucs
Next weekend ETSU will hit the road to Virginia Tech to compete in the Hokie Invitational. The meet will be a two-day event that starts on January 20 and concluding the next day.
Following the meet at VT, ETSU will host its second of three meets this season: the Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational. The meet will begin on February 2 and conclude on February 4 inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.
Catamounts Claim Two Individual Titles at ETSU Invitational | Results
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A pair of Western Carolina women’s track & field team members claimed individual titles on the final day of the ETSU Invitational. Seniors Hailey Cook and Chenell Bryan led the way for WCU as Cook won the women’s shot put and Bryan took home the long jump title. Overall 14 individuals finished in the top-10 for WCU and three relay teams.
Cook won the shot put with a mark of 14.41m while sophomore Simone Williams came in 10th with a distance of 11.81m.
Bryan was joined on the podium in the long jump by fellow senior Tiffani Lewis. Bryan finished atop the standings with a distance of 5.67m while Lewis took second with a mark of 5.65m. Lewis also picked up a top-10 finish in the women’s 60m as she placed sixth in the finals with a time of 7.72.
The men’s 4x400m relay team came in second as they completed the course in 3:18.27. The women placed two relay teams in the top 10 as the “A” squad finished fourth with a time of 3:58.46 while the “B” team came in ninth after stopping the clock in 4:10.22.
Sophomore J'len Wilson took third in the men’s 60m hurdles as he completed the distance in 8.35. Freshman Jazmine Gooden also took third on the women’s side in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.88.
A trio of Catamounts finished in the top-10 of the men’s shot put led by senior Scott Peretin who came in third with a mark of 15.67m. Senior Evan Albertson finished three spots back in sixth with a distance of 14.43m while junior Mateius Brown placed ninth after tossing the element 14.03m.
The final top-three finish came from sophomore Kaitlyn Lingard in the women’s one mile. She completed the distance in 5:19.06. Freshman Tyler Robakiewicz took eighth on the men’s side in the one mile with a time of 4:33.58 while sophomore Daniel Kachenchai came in 10th after stopping the clock at 4:35.28.
The final top-10 finish came from junior Meghan Breden who tied for ninth in the women’s pole vault after clearing 3.35m.
The Catamounts will now begin preparations for the Thundering Herd Invitational in Huntington, W.Va., Jan. 27-28.
UNCG Competes at Va. Tech Invite | Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s track team returned to action Saturday morning at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. The meet is the Spartans’ second indoor meet of the season but first in the 2017 calendar year. The Spartans return to the track Jan. 21 at the Wake Forest Invitational.
Freshman Taylor Delaney led the Spartans with a 14th place showing in the 1,000-meter race, posting a time of 2:58.87. Freshman Anna Habich finished 14th overall in the women’s 500-meter race with a time of 1:38.47. Freshman Kaitlyn Stone placed 16thoverall in the mile race with a time of 5:27.58 and Sarah DeSantis was 20thoverall with a time of 5:38.16 to round the Spartans’ top 20 finishes on the women’s side.
Senior Dakarai Shipp led the men’s side with a 16th place finish in the 1,000-meter race at 2:40.46 while Trelek Jones was 20th in a time of 2:46.44. SeniorJonathan Hodge placed 18th in the 300-meter race with a time of 37.27, whileKeeton Glenn was just behind in 20th (38.57). Junior Luke Sumerford rounded out the top finishes with an 18th place showing in the mile, posting a time of 4:27.47.
Wofford Indoor Track and Field Competes at ETSU Invitational | Results
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams continued the season on Friday and Saturday at the ETSU Invitational. The Terriers posted numerous top ten finishes and two school records were broken at the meet.
Bosco Bapoupeleh was the top finisher for the men in the 60 meters (7.10) and he set a new school record in the 200 meters at 22.61. In the 400 meters, William Stout (52.91) and Conrad Heinrich (53.11) led the Terriers. Heinrich added a time of 8.67 in the 60 meter hurdles. Jack Zemp (1:57.93) and Joe Harbacevich (1:58.24) both finished in the top ten in the 800 meters. Cisco Ferre was 15th in the mile at 4:38.26 and Cristian Widenhouse was the top Terrier in the 3000 meters. The 4x400 relay was just .23 seconds off the school record and the distance medley relay was fourth overall. Omar Mingo went 12.89 in the triple jump and 6.02 meters in the long jump. Gaston Hayworth had a weight throw of 13.83 meters, while Hunter Griffin threw the shot 13.78 meters.
For the women. Amber Lust ran an 8.09 in the 60 meters. McLeod Dean set a new school record in the 200 meters 25.92, topping the mark she established last season. Kassidy Morton and LeAndrea Combo both reached the finals of the 400 meters, with Combo fifth at 1:00.2 and Morton sixth at 1:00.17. Madison Paraskeva was the top Terrier in the 800 meters at 2:25.48, while Taryn Schoen and Anya Bunao were 11th and 12th respectively in the mile. Shannon McAndrew was the top Wofford finisher in the 3000 meters. Amber Lust qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles and was fifth at 8.94, just .03 off her previous school record. The 4x400 relay was sixth, while the distance medley relay team took first place. Alex Burgess went 10.96 meters in the triple jump and her 5.50 meters in the long jump was sixth overall. Emily Williams was the top Wofford finished in the shot put.
Among the schools competing in the meet were Appalachian State, Western Carolina, VCU, Kennesaw State, USC Upstate, and UNC Asheville.
The teams will continue the season next weekend at the Mountaineer Open, hosted by Appalachian State.
Bulldogs Impress at UAB Blazer Invite on Friday | Results
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University track and field team opened its 2017 indoor season in impressive fashion Friday as the Bulldogs completed the single-day competition with two first-place finishers and 14 top-five performers at the UAB Blazer Invite held at the CrossPlex.
Samford's Marquis Barnes matched his personal-best distance in the indoor long jump to take first place in the event with a mark of 7.26 meters. His teammate, Javion Lee, also earned the championship title in the triple jump with a distance of 14.62 meters.
The Bulldogs' men dominated the 1-mile run Friday as they notched four of the top-five finishers in the event. Samford's Ben Bryant cruised to a first-place finish in the competition with a time of 4:15.78, while Owen Bailey finished second (4:22.32), Josh Salter earned the third-place position (4:24.15) and Paul Richardson notched the fifth-place mark (4:25.36).
Sarah Fairchild earned a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:35.25, while Shian Mallory set a Samford record in the 1,000-meter run in 2:54.99. Mallory placed second in the event trailing only Emily Buwalda of North Alabama (2:53.57).
The Bulldogs' Courtney Prengaman finished tied for second place in the women's high jump with a height of 1.69 meters. She tied Southern Miss' Trista Barry for the position, while FIU's Clarissa Cutliff took the title at 1.74 meters.
Samford true freshman Emmanuel Tait started his Bulldog career in impressive fashion Friday with a pair of top-five finishes. Tait, who was a standout at Thompson High School throughout his prep career, earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8:05) and a fifth-place performance in the 60-meter dash (6.91).
The Bulldogs' Jonathan Helton and Dillon Dean placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run. Helton turned in a time of 2:33.99, while Dean followed closely at 2:35.66.
Samford's Keyth Fightmaster continued his solid performances in the high jump Friday by posting a second-place height of 2.10 meters. He trailed only Kris Kornegay-Gober of North Alabama, who registered a 2.21-meter mark.
Along with the Samford men's and women's track and field teams, the 2017 UAB Blazer Invite also included the following schools: Alabama State, UCF (W), Florida A&M, FAU (W), FIU, Georgia State, Jacksonville State (W), Mississippi State, New Orleans, Shorter, South Alabama, USF, Southern Miss, St. Norbert College and VCU.
The Samford University track and field team will next be in action Wednesday as the Bulldogs host the 2017 Samford Stand Alone Multi Competition, which will also be held at the CrossPlex, Jan. 18-19.
