SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior guard Lydia McGee has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Jan. 4-10, the league office announced Wednesday.
McGee, who missed Samford’s first 14 games of the 2016-17 season due to injury, returned to action for the Bulldogs against Chattanooga last week. The senior guard logged 14 minutes, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists against the Mocs. Against ETSU on Sunday, McGee posted 12 points after shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, one assist and one steal in just 18 minutes of action in the Bulldogs’ 69-57 loss against the Bucs.
The Madison, Ala., native boasts a 4.0 GPA, while pursuing her master’s degree in athletic training. McGee earned her undergraduate degree in health science last spring.
The Bulldogs (6-10, 0-2 SoCon) return to action on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. (ET) as they take on the Catamounts of Western Carolina (5-12, 0-2 SoCon) in Cullowhee, N.C., which will air on ESPN3.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
