SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State 133-pounder Colby Smith has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Jan. 4-10. The selection is made by the league office.
Smith went 2-0 on the week, topping opponents from The Citadel and Clarion.
In 21st-ranked Appalachian State’s 34-15 SoCon win over the Bulldogs on Sunday, Smith pinned Andrew Szalwinski in 2:47. The freshman from Wentzville, Missouri, followed that up with a 14-2 major decision over Clarion’s Roshaun Cooley later in the afternoon as the Mountaineers picked up their second dual win of the day.
Appalachian State (9-2, 4-0 SoCon) is idle for the next week, returning to action Tuesday, Jan. 17, when it heads to Durham, North Carolina, to take on Duke at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers resume SoCon action on Jan. 24 when they host Gardner-Webb (4-2, 1-0).
