Winthrop Downs Furman, 3-2, at Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Lourdes Rosario tallied 21 kills and Winthrop outlasted Furman, 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 7-15) on Sunday morning in each team's final match of the 2016 Carolina Classic. The win moves Winthrop to 2-4 on the year, while the loss drops the Paladins also to 2-4.

Taina Joseph led the Paladins with a season-high 14 kills, just one off of her career-high mark, and added seven blocks, also one off of her career-high mark. Annie Bierman put down 11 kills and 13 digs for another double-double, while Hunter Thompson picked up her first career double-double with 14 assists and 15 digs. The Paladins turned in 14 total blocks, including 7 block assists by Anna Parsons.

Winthrop used a 6-1 run to open up a 15-9 lead in the first set, prompting Furman's first timeout of the match. The teams traded runs until the Eagles used a 5-2 run to close out the set, 25-17, and take a 1-0 match lead. Furman jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in set two, before Winthrop closed the gap to 9-8. The teams then traded runs until back-to-back Furman blocks gave the Paladins a 21-17 lead and forced Winthrop to call a timeout. The Eagles pulled to within two at 24-22, but Furman used a Winthrop service error to take set two, 25-22, to tie the match at one.

The teams traded points early in the third set, before Winthrop used a 4-1 run to open a lead the Paladins couldn't overcome, as the Eagles took set three, 25-20, for a 2-1 match lead. Furman and Winthrop again traded points to start the fourth set, until Anna Eckstein's serving sparked a 4-0 run, giving the Paladins a 22-18 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to two at 22-20, then again at 24-22, but Furman got a kill from Anna Parsons to win set four, 25-22, and send the match to a fifth set.

The Paladins cut the Winthrop lead to 6-5 early in the fifth, before the Eagles used a 6-0 run to take a 12-5 lead, taking set five, 15-7, for a 3-2 match lead.

Furman is back in action on Friday, September 9, taking on Davidson in the Wildcat Classic in Davidson, N.C.
