ETSU?s Sutherland named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Sept. 12-18 after posting a pair of shutouts on the week, including one of No. 1 North Carolina. The selection is made by the league office.

Sutherland stopped three shots in the 1-0, overtime win Tuesday against the previously undefeated Tar Heels, who entered the match ranked No. 1 nationally by Soccer America and No. 2 by the NSCAA. The win was ETSU’s first over a top-ranked opponent in school history.

The sophomore from Chester, United Kingdom, stopped another three shots in Sunday’s 1-0 win over UNC Asheville, notching consecutive shutouts for the first time in his collegiate career. Sutherland now has three shutouts in his last four games and eight for his career.

The weekly award is the first of Sutherland’s career. He was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Men’s Team of the Week, while teammate Chase Clack earned a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.

ETSU (4-2-0), which has also taken on No. 22 West Virginia this season, continues its daunting schedule when it heads to Lexington, Kentucky, to face the 20th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday. The Bucs then open SoCon play at No. 18 Furman on Sept. 27.
