SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman goalkeeper Jonathan Smith has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Sept. 5-11 after posting a pair of shutouts on the week, including one of nationally ranked Kentucky. The selection is made by the league office.

Smith posted nine saves on the week, turning away four shots in a 1-0, double-overtime win over Presbyterian on Wednesday and five more Saturday in a 1-0 win over Kentucky, which entered the match ranked No. 10 nationally by TopDrawerSoccer.com, No. 15 by Soccer America and No. 16 by the NSCAA. Smith made a pair of point-blank saves against the Wildcats in earning his third shutout of the season and second against a ranked squad (No. 23 FIU, Aug. 26).

The Columbia, South Carolina, sophomore has allowed just three goals and made 21 saves in five matches on the year, good for a 0.56 goals against average and an .875 save percentage.

Furman (3-1-1) hits the road to face Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
