SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Furman men’s cross country program cracked the top five in the USTFCCCA southeast region preseason rankings as the Paladins were selected fourth, while the ETSU men’s team was picked 15th in the south region. On the women’s side, Furman was picked fifth in the southeast region.
The Furman men’s squad finished fourth in the southeast region and 13th nationally last season, while the Buccaneers finished 16th out of 47 teams in the south region last season. It is the second straight year that both programs have been selected in the preseason regional rankings.
The Paladins’ women’s team, which was not ranked at the conclusion of the 2015 season, currently ranks fifth behind No. 1 NC State, Virginia, William & Mary and Virginia Tech, respectively. Furman only raced two student-athletes at the southeast regional meet, including senior Allie Buchalski, who placed fourth in last year’s 6k race with a time of 20:40.2.
USTFCCCA regional cross country rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA regional championships.
