UNCG's Thompson Wins ITA Summer Circuit Tourney

ATHENS, Ga. – UNCG's Connor Thompson won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Summer Circuit tournament at the University of Georgia last week.  Thompson earned victories in five matches over the weekend of July 1-3 to capture the tournament title. 

The ITA Summer Circuit features 50 tournaments spread across 24 states this summer.  The summer circuit runs for six weekends, beginning in the last weekend in June and continuing through the last weekend in July.  Players that advance out of the qualifying tournaments will head to Bloomington, Indiana, to take part in the ITA Summer Nationals, held Aug. 13-16 at Indiana University.  Currently, Thompson is tied for sixth place in the Summer Circuit standings.

Thompson, the third seed in the initial round of 64, earned a bye before earning three-straight two-set victories over Jon Mascagni (6-2, 6-0), Joseph Durham (6-1, 6-0), and Al Hill (6-3, 6-1).  Thompson battled back from dropping the first set to defeat the first seed, Galen Lee in three sets (6-7, 6-3, 1-0) to earn the victory.  It was the first three-set match for either competitor on the weekend.
