SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel has been named the host for the Southern Conference Wrestling Championship in 2017 and 2018 in a recent vote of league administrators.

The tournament will be held at the Bulldogs’ McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C., for the next two seasons. The annual event has been conducted in Charleston seven times, most recently in 2009.

The SoCon Wrestling Championship had been held at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C., in conjunction with the league’s basketball tournaments the last two seasons, but because of uncertainty over Kimmel’s availability going forward, the wrestling tournament was put back out to bid.

Appalachian State is the reigning SoCon tournament titleholder, as the Mountaineers knocked off five-time defending champion Chattanooga in an exciting 2016 edition of the meet. Appalachian State got a win from SoCon Wrestler of the Year Denzel Dejournette in the heavyweight match to secure a half-point win in the team race.

The 2017 championship will take place March 4, while the 2018 event will be held March 3.
