INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Committee announced the field for its championship tournament on Sunday. Notre Dame, the No. 3 seed, will host Air Force, Saturday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET, in the first round of the 2016 Men’s Lacrosse Championships. The NCAA selection marks the fourth NCAA appearance in program history.
Air Force will meet with Notre Dame for the 23rd time in program history; the Fighting Irish lead the series, 20-2. The teams first met in 1988, the Falcons won, 14-8. The last time the teams met was April 4, 2009, in South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame won, 10-4.
All Division I first round games will be televised on ESPNU. The quarterfinal games will all be televised on ESPN2 or ESPNU May 21 and 22. The Division I semifinal and championship games, and the Division II and III championship games, will be held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 28-30 and hosted by Drexel University. The Division I semifinals will be televised live on ESPN2 starting at Noon Eastern time, May 28. The championship game will be televised live on ESPN2 starting at 1 p.m. Eastern time, May 30.
The Falcons met with Maryland in their debut NCAA appearance in 1971. The Terps outscored the Falcons, 10-1. Air Force made its second NCAA appearance in 1988, against Loyola. The Greyhounds outscored the Falcons, 19-8.
In their third appearance, the Falcons faced off against Richmond for the first time in an NCAA play-in game, May 7, 2014. The 13-5 win over the Spiders marked the Falcon’s first ever NCAA tournament win. Following the play-in game, Air Force met with Duke, May 11. The Blue Devils outscored the Falcons, 20-9.
