ETSU Doubles Team Advances In NCAA Tourney

TULSA, Okla. – A day after winning the program’s first ever match in the NCAA Doubles Championship, ETSU men’s tennis players David Biosca and Rogerio Ribeiro made some more history Friday defeating the nation’s top-ranked doubles team from Florida, Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson, by scores of 6-4 and 7-5 to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinal round. With the win, Biosca and Ribeiro achieve All-American honors. They are just the third and fourth players in program history to achieve the feat joining current Head Coach Yaser Zaatini (1991, 1992, 1993) and former Buc Enrique Oliveras (2008).

“Can’t find words worthy to explain what these two young men did,” said Zaatini. “They just wrote a new chapter in the history book for ETSU Tennis, but more importantly in the history of our athletic department. They became All-Americans and beat the No. 1 team in the nation. This is a tribute to hard work, love and the ‘all in’ mentality of the team, Ricky Rojas and our whole staff.”

After winning the first set 6-4, Biosca and Ribeiro rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to not only tie the score at three a piece but also pull ahead before eventually finishing off the match, 7-5. With the win, Biosca and Ribeiro improve 13-6 this season and a perfect 3-0 against nationally ranked opponents.

The next opponent for Biosca and Ribeiro is still to be determined along with the start time. They will face the winner of the match between Ohio State’s Mikael Torpergaard/Herkko Pollanen and North Carolina’s Jack Murray/Brayden Schnur. The duos are currently ranked No. 22 and No. 27 in Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings.
