Carter named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina senior Tayla Carter has been named General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held May 11-16, the league office announced Tuesday.

Carter, a senior on the WCU women’s track and field squad, capped her career in Cullowhee, N.C., by sweeping the 100-meter and 200-meter dash titles at the 2016 SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The Marietta, Ga., native finished her career undefeated in those distances at SoCon championships, claiming first-place finishes for four straight years.

Carter concluded the day by leading the WCU women to victory as a member of the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. Leading Samford by just 1.5 points going into the 4x400-meter relay – the meet’s final event – Carter anchored the Catamount team, which went on to win the event by more than six seconds. The victory clinched the women’s championship and sealed up the Catamounts’ first men’s and women’s title sweep since 2013.

In the classroom, Carter posted a 3.52 grade point average as a psychology major.

Other nominees: Mady Riegel (The Citadel, track and field), David Biosca (ETSU, men’s tennis), Matthew Quarles (Furman, baseball) and Teghan Henderson (Chattanooga, track and field).
