SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina designated hitter Andrew Bullock and Wofford left-hander Adam Scott have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games May 9-15. The selections are made by the league office.
Bullock hit .545, slugged 1.455 and had an on-base percentage of .688 as the Catamounts took on Georgia and won a series from league-leading UNCG last week. The freshman hit three home runs and a double, drew five walks, scored five runs and recorded seven RBIs.
After going 0-for-2 against the SEC’s Bulldogs after being inserted as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning, Bullock heated up against the Spartans. He opened the series Friday by reaching base four times, drawing two walks and hitting a first-inning single and a three-run homer in the fifth as the Catamounts won 8-5.
The next day, the Chesapeake, Va., native was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored, hitting two more home runs and a double as WCU clinched the series with a 19-8 win. Bullock was on base three more times Sunday, walking twice and hitting an RBI single in the ninth as UNCG salvaged the finale.
Western Carolina (25-25, 15-9 SoCon) concludes the regular season with a Tuesday game at Cincinnati and a three-game set at Kent State before opening SoCon Baseball Championship play next week.
Also nominated: Ben Feden (The Citadel), Hagen Owenby (ETSU), Cesar Trejo (UNCG), Heath Quinn (Samford), Collin Fleischer (VMI) and Kody Ruedisili (Wofford).
Scott threw a complete-game two-hitter Sunday, facing just one batter over the minimum as Wofford beat ETSU 10-0 in seven innings. The sophomore southpaw allowed just a single in the second and another in the fifth, seeing the first erased on a steal attempt.
Scott struck out two and didn’t walk a batter in throwing his third career complete-game shutout. The Canandaigua, N.Y., native handed the Bucs just their second shutout of the season.
Wofford (29-24, 11-10 SoCon) concludes the regular season at rival Furman (25-27, 12-9 SoCon) in a three-game series that will have huge seeding implications for the SoCon Championship.
