ETSU?s Cowart named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU senior Bethany Cowart has been named General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held April 13-19, the league office announced Wednesday.

Cowart, an outfielder on the ETSU softball team, powered the Bucs offense in a 2-1 series win at Mercer over the weekend. The Ringgold, Ga., native hit .556 (5-for-9) and recorded at least one hit in each contest against the Bears. On Saturday, Cowart tallied a single and drew a walk in a 7-2 game-one win before tacking on a double in two plate appearances in the second half of the doubleheader. She then exploded in the finale on Sunday, blasting a pair of home runs and driving in a career-high five runs in an 11-7 victory. The performance marked the first multi-home run game of Cowart’s career.

Cowart earned SoCon Player of the Week honors on Monday. She is currently third on the ETSU squad with a .319 batting average and leads her team with 29 hits and four stolen bases.

The exercise science major boasts a near-perfect 3.99 grade point average. She was a member of the Spring Academic All-SoCon team and was named to the SoCon's Academic Honor Roll as a junior.

Other nominees: Ansley Speaks (Furman, women’s tennis), Alison Storie (Chattanooga, women’s tennis) and Taylor Sigmon (Western Carolina, softball).
