SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the pairings and times for the 2016 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championships Saturday (April 16). The Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., will serve as the host for next weekend’s eight-team event (April 22-24).
Furman earned the No. 1 seed by claiming a 4-3 decision over ETSU Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two teams who were undefeated in league play. The Paladins moved to 7-0 in SoCon play to earn the regular season title, while the Bucs claimed the No. 2 seed. Furman will open the tournament Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against No. 8 Western Carolina. The winner of that match will take on either No. 4 Samford or No. 5 Wofford. The Bulldogs and Terriers are also set for a 1:00 p.m. start Friday.
The No. 2 Bucs will face No. 7 Mercer Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The fourth quarterfinal also starts at 3:00 p.m. when No. 3 Chattanooga takes on No. 6 UNCG.
Saturday’s semifinal matchups will begin at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday’s championship match is set for 1:00 p.m.
Furman, Samford and Chattanooga are the only current SoCon members to have won the conference tournament. The Mocs won the first three tournaments (1984-86) and have five tournament championships to their credit. Furman leads all programs with 16 Southern Conference Tournament championships. The Paladins last won the league’s tourney in 2008. Samford claimed its first tournament title last year in Greenville, S.C.
