SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Caleb Albrecht and The Citadel’s Capers Williamson have earned Southern Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, respectively, while Samford posted a sweep of the women’s awards courtesy Sarah Sanford (track) and Selena Popp (field), the league office announced Wednesday. Selections were made by a group of the league’s track and field coaches and included competition held April 6-12.
Albrecht, a freshman for the Catamounts, collected men’s track honors by clocking a 1:53.48 in the 800-meter run at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic. The time marked a personal best for the Franklin, N.C., native and ranks third in the SoCon this season. Albrecht also ran a 48.5-second split on WCU’s SoCon-leading 4x400-meter relay squad.
Williamson claimed men’s field accolades after winning the javelin throw with a conference-leading mark of 70.55 meters (231' 5") at the Bill Carson ECU Invitational. The throw broke his own program record for the second time in less than a month and ranks 20th in the country.
Sanford, a sophomore, earned women’s track honors by turning in a pair of SoCon-best times at the Tiger Track Classic. The Hoover, Ala., product registered a time of 13.53 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles for a fourth-place finish and added a personal-best effort of 54.97 seconds in the 400-meter dash, which was good for a 10th-place finish.
Popp made it a sweep for Samford on the women’s side after recording a mark of 1.70 meters in the high jump, which is tied for first in the conference. The Bulldog newcomer also competed in the 100-meter hurdles and 4x4 relay in Auburn, Ala.
SoCon track and field continues this weekend with eight league schools in action.
