SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Katarina Weymouth has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 4-10. Weymouth went 5-1 in all competition last week as the Paladins went 3-0 with wins over Western Carolina (6-1), Chattanooga (4-3) and Samford (5-2).

A freshman from London, England, Weymouth won three straight-set matches at No. 2 singles last week.  She defeated Western Carolina’s Megan McLinden, 6-4, 6-2 and topped Chattanooga’s Kelsey Coots, 7-6, 6-2.  Weymouth closed the week with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Samford’s Carita Moolman.  She has won her last eight singles matches and is 15-5 this spring in singles play.

Weymouth was paired with Ansley Speaks at No. 1 doubles and Furman’s top tandem went 2-1 last week.  Speaks and Weymouth held off WCU’s McLinden and Stacia Kissell, 7-5, but saw their seven-match win streak snapped by Chattanooga’s Coots and Kayla Jones (4-6).  Furman’s top doubles team then closed the week with a 7-6 (7-4) win over Samford’s Moolman and Jessica Northcutt.

Furman (13-8, 6-0 SoCon) will visit ETSU (17-1, 6-0 SoCon) Saturday afternoon in a match that will decide the Southern Conference regular season championship.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Lyn Yee Choo, UNCG’s Masey DeMoss, Samford’s Ellie Gerlach and Wofford’s Cassidy Hicks.
